Técnico welcomes project that aims to increase the resilience of coastal cities to climate change
The SCORE Project brought together two dozen partners, at the Taguspark campus of Instituto Superior Técnico.
On November 30th, the Taguspark campus of Instituto Superior Técnico brought together 25 members of the SCORE (Smart Control of the Climate Resilience in European Coastal Cities) project. The project’s mission is to increase the resilience of coastal cities to climate change, through the application of innovative solutions. In Portugal, it applies to the city of Oeiras, one of the “living laboratories”, in which the aim is to create an inclusive climate action community through the active involvement of citizens. Researchers from Instituto Superior Técnico ensure technical training for assessing the risk associated with extreme weather events in the municipality. “We try to adapt the technical qualifications of the Técnico team to the risks that the SCORE project intends to address, taking into account the area under study”, explains Maria Manuela Portela, professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and responsible for Técnico’s participation in the project.
SCORE is a European project funded by Horizon 2020, lasting four years (until July 2025), which has 28 partners from 12 countries and a total budget of around 10 million euros.
Throughout the workshop, held at the Técnico facilities in Oeiras, Nature-based solutions (SbN) were analyzed, as well as their contribution to increasing the resilience of territories with risks associated with climate change, specifically, with regard to the Municipality of Oeiras, the risk of flooding in the Green and Blue Axis (EVA) along the Jamor river. In addition to the company Environment and Management (ENT), elements from Técnico, the Municipality of Oeiras and schools, including universities, and citizens participated in the discussion.
