Games showcase highlights the diversity of student projects

The Técnico Game Lab organised the 16th edition of the Games Showcase (MOJO) at Taguspark Campus. The event brought together video game enthusiasts who had the opportunity to test a wide variety of video games developed by Técnico students throughout the year.
This year, the initiative showcased twelve projects developed by students enrolled in the Game Development Methodology curricular unit, which is part of the Master’s Programme in Computer Science and Engineering. The projects were also evaluated by the professors of the curricular unit. The event also included the presentation of seven games created by guests from INESC-ID, GameDev Técnico and other students who developed theses or projects on this theme.
Pedro Bento, a Computer Science and Engineering MSc student, presented the game he developed as part of his thesis. “I wanted to see if people joined my study and thus get some results”. In this game, the players could interact with several artificial intelligence partners and analyse which ones they liked the most and tell why.
“Watching people play our game and having this intention of not giving any indication about the game, we were able to understand their point of view. Because when we create a video game we imagine what players will feel and it’s interesting to see if those expectations are met”, said Carolina Brás, a 1st-year master’s student.
In addition to the educational content, the event also establishes a bridge between Técnico and the games industry, in a unique format, as companies have the opportunity to see a product that shows the skills of Técnico students.
“Several video game companies attended this event and selected the games they like the most. I think this is a very enriching experience because participants and visitors have the opportunity to share ideas and knowledge” stressed Carolina Brás.
Every year, the Games Showcase promotes not only their development but also the advantages of introducing them in everyday life. This initiative started in 2007 and arose from the need to showcase the games to the community, since there was no event in this format.
