Campus and Community

The 9th edition of the Industrial Engineering and Management Conference brought together several companies in the atrium of the Oeiras Campus

The Industrial Engineering and Management Days, organized by the Industrial Engineering and Management Student Group (NEEGI), took place on 18 and 19 February in the central atrium of the Oeiras Campus. This initiative, part of the Technical Career Weeks, aimed to bring students and companies closer together.

The opening session opened the doors to the event with a speech by Professor Adelino Galvão, a member of the Oeiras Campus Management Committee, followed by a speech by Professor Tânia Varela, coordinator of Técnico’s Industrial Engineering and Management course. “The JEGI are officially open,” emphasized Francisco Silva, Vice-President of NEEGI.

On the first day, the program offered a diverse experience. The lecture “Phrases that sell”, given by IKEA, and the session “Ace the Interview with Kearney” brought practical notions of presentation during professional interviews. During the speed interview sessions and the Worten workshop, “Supply chain – from source to customer”, the students got a closer look at how logistical challenges translate into opportunities in the business world. Paulo Lopes, a former student at the Oeiras Campus and now a representative of BIP Consulting Portugal, says that “I’ve already had the opportunity to be here as an organizer and as a student, and today I can see that direct contact allows us to identify people who fit the profiles we’re looking for”.

On the second day, the workshop “Investing in the Future”, organized by Iberis Capital, and the practical case study organized by NEEGI, were the main focuses of the day, offering a real insight into the challenges of the job market. For Inês Maia, a student on the Master’s in Industrial Engineering and Management, the event was “a unique opportunity to interact with company representatives, get to know the internal dynamics of work environments and understand the importance of a place that values professional growth”.

The choice of future course is always an important factor, so the Days were also attended by secondary school students, such as Leonor Romana, from Santa Maria School in Sintra, who said she had discovered new ideas for her studies and innovative initiatives, such as the Técnico Fuel Cell project – Técnico’s hydrogen car. Leonor also points out that “it’s a strong option to come and study at Técnico, as it opens doors to the business world”.

The presence of the business sector was also notable. Catarina Loureiro, from the Sonae group, pointed out: “I have already seen that the candidates demonstrate a proactive and innovative profile, characteristics that we value in order to create impact and generate value for both the company and the country.” Pedro Serrano, a CTT employee, reinforced this view by explaining that taking part in JEGI makes it possible to attract professionals from different areas – from mechanical engineering to industrial management – who are essential for the logistical and operational challenges in his company. Pedro also stressed that the event goes beyond publicizing trainee programs, including volunteer opportunities and participation in strategy and innovation projects.

The event ended with the closing ceremony and a cocktail on the rooftop of Tutto Passa, open to EGI students and alumni.
